ABOUT US

The Brass Tacks Initiative is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded on a mission to support sustainable practices in the food stream through research, education, and collaboration.

BACKGROUND

Food waste is a growing concern around the globe because of its environmental, economic, and social impacts. The United Nations has recognized this concern and is working toward cutting global food waste in half by 2030 and reducing waste through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse. We believe the only way to accomplish these goals is by researchingΒ best practices and new methods of reducing and reusing food waste,Β collaboratingΒ with the companies who are producing the waste to find alternatives to the landfill, and making sure that current and future leaders are equipped with theΒ educationΒ needed to make sustainable impacts in their community.

What's with the name?

Our name comes from the phrase "let's get down to the brass tacks." The phrase means to to address the most important facts of a project or problem. The fact is food waste is a problem with environmental, economic, and social impacts. This problem will only get worse as the population increases unless more sustainable practices are adopted by both consumers and industry.
